BEREA—A man in his mid- to late-40s is in stable condition at UK hospital following a wreck at about 9:00 this morning in the parking lot in front of the Berea Walk-in Clinic on Paint Lick Road, according to a first responder on the scene.

Berea Police Department Officer Austin Davis told The Edge that the driver of a red Ford Focus smashed through a barrier made of railroad ties, slamming into a parked car. Davis said the man was a guest of the next door hotel, the Comfort Inn & Suites, and that the man was transported to the hospital following the accident.

Later, in a text, Sgt. Barry Manley of the BPD told The Edge that first responders were unsure of the severity of the man's injuries so they had him transported directly to UK Chandler Hospital in Lexington rather than to a local emergency department, just in case they were in fact severe. UK Chandler is the area's closest Level 1 trauma center.

The Kentucky license plate on the Focus had a Fayette County sticker on it.

The damaged car's owner, Destiny Grove, a Berea resident and a nurse practitioner at the clinic where the accident occurred, told The Edge in an interview on scene that she hadn't witnessed the accident, but that she was still in shock since seeing her car totaled.

"I also have two small children, and I keep thinking about what might have happened if they'd been in the car," she said.

Eye witnesses to the accident said the man did not slow down, but charged through the barriers, impacting Grove's car with so much force, the car went from being at a 90 degree angle to the man's car, to moving several feet on the diagonal. Grove said some of her colleagues who saw the accident through the window of their office at the clinic, described the driver as a middle aged man.

No one else was injured in the accident. No word yet on whether charges will be filed on the driver, or the cause for why the man failed to stop his vehicle before the accident.
